Solana Beach Resident Gets Shoutout During Obama’s Health Care Announcement

President Obama Delivers a Statement On The Affordable Care Act

President Barack Obama delivers a statement regarding the deadline on the Affordable Care Act, April 1, 2014.

A 57-year-old former software engineer from Solana Beach made national headlines Wednesday for his letter to Barack Obama, which was shared by the president in a televised speech as he announced that 7.1 million Americans have signed up for health care under the Affordable Care Act.

"Sean Casey from Solana Beach, California, always made sure to cover his family on the private market, but pre-existing medical conditions meant his annual tab was over $30,000,'' Obama said from the White House Rose Garden Tuesday. "This year, the Casey family's premiums will fall from over $30,000 to under $9,000.''

For his part, Casey told reporters that he was surprised to hear his name and story in the six-minute speech but pretty excited, too.

Great story.

Being an individual plan member, myself, I know several people who have also benefitted with costs savings like that. And the peace of mind!

Even though taxpayers are picking up a part of that tab, it's still less expensive to taxpayers (and other individual plan members) than the old system where uninsured people got their medical care through emergency rooms, where the cost is highest.

The ACA is working.

Yes, it's been a bumpy ride, but 7 million people who now have access to healthcare is a success for anyone who cares about health access, public health, the health and vitality of our country, global competition, and fixing a broken system of back-door socialized emergency rooms and rampant bankruptcies stemming from medical bills.

Those political charlatans against comprehensive healthcare reform will, quite simply, go down in history as dopes.

Please pay your premiums or all this progress is for naught.
