About $4 million in state and federal grants were awarded for after-school programs in San Diego County.
The San Diego Unified School will get about $3.5 million, according to the California Department of Education. Elementary schools in Julian will get about $238,000, and elementary schools in Vallecitos will get $90,000.
About $280,000 will be split among East County schools.
"Children are always learning, and their families should have access to high-quality programs that support that learning," state Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson said. "These grants will help schools operate before- and after-school programs, which play an important role in keeping kids safe, while also helping them build their skills for the world that awaits them."
Summer and intersession programs will benefit from the funding, which comes from the After School Education and Safety program, the 21st Century Community Learning Centers Elementary & Middle Schools program, and the 21st Century High School After School Safety and Enrichment for Teens program.
After-school programs at Clairemont, Hoover, Lincoln, Madison, Mission Bay, Morse, Point Loma and Serra high schools will receive $250,000 in funding. Other San Diego Unified programs will receive smaller amounts.
All together, about $51 million was distributed from the three grants to 333 programs throughout the state, according to the Education Department.
