The United States Navy has sent the USS Pinckney (homeport San Diego) to aid in the search for Malaysia Airlines flight MH370.

According to a Navy news release, the Pinckney is heading towards the southern coast of Vietnam:

Pinckney was conducting training and maritime security operations in international waters of the South China Sea.

The ship could be in vicinity of the missing jet within 24 hours and carries two MH-60R helicopters equipped for search and rescue.
CNN reports the Vietnamese military, searching by plane during daylight hours, spotted what they believed to be oil slicks:
The oil slicks are between 6 and 9 miles long and are suspected to be from the missing plane, the Vietnam government's official news agency reported. The traces of oil were found about 90 miles south of Tho Chu Island...

In addition to the Pinckney, the U.S. military is sending a P-3C Orion aircraft from Kadena Air Base in Okinawa, "bringing long-range search, radar and communications capabilities to the efforts."
