San Diego Housing Authority To Decide On Homeless Shelter Extension

The city's Housing Authority is set to consider Monday funding temporary emergency homeless shelters in the East Village and the Midway District for an extra three months.

If approved, the Single Adult Homeless Emergency Shelter, which is operated by the Alpha Project for the Homeless at 16th Street and Newton Avenue and the Veterans Homeless Emergency Shelter, run by the Veterans Village of San Diego, at 2801 1/2 Sports Arena Blvd. would remain in operation until June 30.

The shelters' 350 beds are expected to serve 540 transients during the extension, which would begin April 1, according to a San Diego Housing Commission report.

The city's temporary use agreement with the Navy for the property on which the Veterans Homeless Emergency Shelter sits currently is set to expire April 10.

City staffers said in the report that the need for immediate overnight shelter assistance to some of the city's most vulnerable was "critical to the well-being of our community members."

If approved, $1 million from the city's projected general fund surplus will be used to keep the shelters in business.

The Housing Authority approved the shelters' current five-month contracts in September.
