During this hands-on workshop, you will be immersed in a journey that explores the full cycle of a tomato plant from seed starting to food preservation. These key concepts may be applied to all aspects of your vegetable garden. The first part of our time together will focus on tomato plant care, propagation and harvesting. Students will transplant seedlings and mix soil recipes for take a take home container garden. After a short break, students will be exposed to scientifically proven methods for short term food storage and long-term preservation of your bounty.
Students will learn:
– Basic botany
– Soil recipes for indoor and outdoor use
– Germination techniques
– Plant care basics including, pruning and harvesting techniques
– Food preservation methods including, refrigeration, freezing, pickling, fermentation, water bath canning
– Seasonal recipes
Students will receive:
– Online access to resource guides
– 5 gallon container garden: choice of salsa garden or pizza garden
– Heirloom seedling starter kit
– Seasonal preserved tasters
