San Diego officials hired consultants from Kroll earlier this year to help reconcile dual investigations by the city attorney's office and outside lawyers into the fiscal crisis.
The city has paid Kroll and its lawyers $6 million so far. Some of the firm's top people charge as much as $900 per hour.
Kroll has come under fire by the city attorney's office for submitting invoices without itemizing charges. Kroll acknowledged earlier this week it has billed the city for meetings with the Union-Tribune's editorial board, the Wall Street Journal and the local chamber of commerce.
The meetings were held to give the news outlets and the chamber updates on Kroll's work. City Attorney Mike Aguirre has asked Kroll consultants to explain their sessions with the media. He also wants detailed records of the cost of those meetings.
