Supporters of a failed ballot measure that would have required doctors to notify parents before performing an abortion on a minor are giving it another try. Backers are trying to gather enough signatures to place the issue on the November ballot. KPBS Reporter Kenny Goldberg has the story.
The measure is a constitutional amendment that would require doctors to notify parents 48 hours before a minor had an abortion.
Californians voted against the concept last November, when they rejected Prop 73 by a six-point margin.
Initiative spokesman Albin Rhomberg says he's not deterred.
Rhomberg: We were actually very encouraged. Naturally we were very disappointed it didn't pass, but it did the best of all eight initiatives, in spite of the fact that we didn't have anywhere near the kind of financial campaign that others had.
To place the measure on the ballot this November, supporters will have to gather 600,000 signatures by July 3rd.
Planned Parenthood remains opposed to parental notification. The group is promising to campaign against the measure if it qualifies. Kenny Goldberg, KPBS News.
