San Diego County's airport authority got its first look Monday at military bases as potential new airport sites. But the military is far from enthusiastic about sharing its land with a new airport. KPBS reporter Beth Ford Roth has the story.
The process of looking at military sites is in its infancy. There still are many months ahead of analyzing the financial, environmental, and operation costs of putting a new civilian airport on a military base.
But already U.S. Secretary of the Navy Donald Winter has sent a letter to Congresswoman Susan Davis rejecting the idea of a future airport on a military base. In response, Authority Board member Mary Sessom made a motion to cease all analysis of military sites.
Sessom: I think with Secretary Winter's letter it's very clear that these military sites, Pendleton, North Island, and Miramar are not available for sole use or for dual use.
The motion failed. The authority has a summer deadline to come up with a future airport site to put before voters in November. Beth Ford Roth, KPBS News.
