A new discovery by San Diego scientists could lead to a potential cure for the most debilitating form of diabetes. Those afflicted with type-one diabetes have to take daily shots of insulin to survive. KPBS reporter Beth Ford Roth has the details.

Researchers at the La Jolla Institute for Allergy and Immunology administered two different diabetes treatments to mice. They found that the combination of the two therapies actually reversed recent onset type-one diabetes in the animals.
Matthias von Herrath leads the team that made the discovery. He hopes the combination treatment could one day have the same effect on people with recent onset type-one diabetes.

von Herrath: And enable them at least with taking less insulin, or in the ideal case if it should work brilliantly well, without taking any insulin, that's really the hope for this.

von Herrath hopes to begin human clinical trials of the treatment by the end of the year. Beth Ford Roth, KPBS News.
