San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders says he's optimistic about the city's budget for the next fiscal year, which starts in July. He says the millions of dollars the city has spent in legal fees defending lawsuits and paying consultants the past few years won't be a drain on future budgets. However, Sanders is worried about the budget for the 2007-2008 fiscal
year.

Sanders: Next year, we've got pay raises going into effect. The Council and the Mayor agreed two years ago to a back end contract where a four percent raise for MEA and 127 is in effect next year. That's going to be, if you just said every city employee is going to get a four-percent raise, that's about $30-million. We have to take a look at how we budget for next year and that's where my concerns start coming in.

Sanders made his comments during an interview today on the KPBS radio
program These Days.
