California Senator Dianne Feinstein says Iraq is embroiled in civil war Feinstein spoke to business leaders in San Diego Monday, where she called for an all-out withdrawal of U.S. forces by the end of 2007. KPBS Radio's Andrew Phelps reports.
California's senior senator laid out a series of missteps -- from faulty intelligence to poor planning to botched ground operations. At a Chamber of Commerce luncheon, Feinstein said the U.S. presence in Iraq is fueling what she calls a civil war.
Feinstein: "If we could remove our force, which has become a political buttress for the Shia, which enables them to continue without making the necessary political accommodations with the Sunni, then, I think we could achieve something."
Feinstein says Iraq wants to be free of U.S. control, and she asked President Bush to give a timeline for when troops might pull out. The senator did vote to authorize the war in 2002. But now she says her position has changed. For KPBS, I'm Andrew Phelps.
