San Diego mayor Jerry Sanders says he supports city attorney Mike Aguirre’s decision to continue fighting to roll back pension benefits. A judge issued a ruling yesterday rejecting much of the suit, and Aguirre has vowed to appeal. KPBS reporter Alison St John has more.
Sanders says he is disappointed by the ruling, but respects it. He supports Aguirre’s decision to appeal, which is in line with what he’s been saying ever since his election campaign: that the courts must decide once and for all if the city’s pension benefits can be rolled back However Sanders asked Aguirre to guarantee that staffing the pension trial will not mean other city legal business gets neglected.
Even Council President Scott Peters has softened his tone towards Aguirre’s pension litigation. Thursday Peters called the trial a waste of taxpayers’ time and money, and promised to call on the city council to put an end to what he called Aguirre’s “failed experiment”
Now Peters appears to have relented. He says he wont oppose the appeal because the mayor has assurances the city attorney will also get the city’s other legal business done. Alison St John, KPBS news.
