90 Percent of Americans Don't Eat Enough Fruits and Veggies

If you're not eating five or more servings a day of fruits and veggies -- you're not alone. New research shows few Americans are. So officials are changing marketing tactics -- in essence, urging people to do their best. From Sacramento, Jenny O'Mara reports.

Newly-released research says about 90 percent of us aren't meeting federal recommendations for fruits and vegetables. So health officials are revamping the Five-a-Day program into a new marketing initiative called ‘Fruits and Veggies -- More Matters.’ Elizabeth Pivonka with the Produce for Better Health Foundation says the new marketing effort targets mothers. She says their research shows Moms want a new approach.

Pivonka : Don't preach to me, don't make me feel guilty, don't overwhelm me with information -- just help me, give me new ideas on how to incorporate fruits and vegetables into my family's diet.

The new campaign offers tips on how to add more produce every day. State health officials say Californians are doing slightly better with that -- they'll release new statewide data on those eating habits next month. Jenny O'Mara, KPBS News.
