New Research Looks to Cure Type-One Diabetes
Alison St John (Guest Host): Being diagnosed with type 1 diabetes can suddenly turn your life into a rigorously scheduled routine of insulin injections and dietary restrictions. Unlike type 2 diabetes, it isn't preventable and it does not have anything to do with eating too much or getting too little exercise. It usually strikes in childhood.
Almost 20 million people worldwide have type 1diabetes, and that number is growing.
A researcher in San Diego is one of half a dozen researchers worldwide who have been awarded a million dollars each by the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation to follow up on promising research aimed at finding a cure.
