Over the past month, several politicians attempted to exist for a week on $1 per meal, the average for food stamp participants. The stunt was part of the Food Stamp Challenge issued by two House members who want to boost the $33 billion program by $4 billion.

Dean Calbreath's recent column included his own personal experience with food stamps and examined what kinds of foods are affordable. 2.5 million Californians cannot afford adequate food for their families. The state has the lowest food stamp participation rate of any state, and San Diego County has the lowest rate – 26 percent -- in the U.S.
