Governor Schwarzenegger has signed legislation that keeps San Diego County's only one room schoolhouse open until the end of this school year. KPBS reporter Ana Tintocalis has more.
Palomar Mountain School is perched atop Palomar Mountain. Over the past several years student enrollment there has dwindled from 30 kids about a decade ago to just seven this year. As a result, state funding to keep Palomar open has dried up.
The governor was considering a bill that would give the school an indefinite amount of funding. Instead, he approved a one-time, $55,000 grant.
Joeleen Tamm's daughter goes to the school.
Tamm : I'm really grateful for the school. I don't think she would get a quality education anywhere else. I mean I couldn't pay for this.
But the future is still uncertain for the one-room school house because it costs about $100,000 a year to keep the school open. Parents say if the historic school closes, they'll be forced to bus their kids up and down dangerous mountain roads to a school an hour away.
