Tom Fudge: One of the most politically active members of any California Indian community over the past decade has been Anthony Pico. Pico is the former chairman of the Viejas tribe . He was co-chairman of the successful Proposition 1A campaign in 2000. Proposition 1A was the initiative that amended the California constitution and allowed California gaming tribes to develop casinos.
Pico is a Vietnam veteran who has seen his tribe's community go from poverty to riches as it developed its casino. He's an advocate for American Indian sovereignty, and he is still a consultant to the Viejas tribe.
Kumeyaay leader Anthony Pico will give the speech “Sovereignty in Contemporary Native America” at 7 p.m. tonight at UCSD in the multipurpose room of the Student Center. It is free and open to the public.
