Tom Fudge: Today, the San Diego Local Agency Formation Commission , LAFCO for short, will meet to consider creating a unified county fire service. Call it a county fire department if you prefer. San Diego is unusual among large California counties in that it has no county fire service. And some people, including Senator Dianne Feinstein , believe that makes it harder for us to fight large conflagrations like the one we saw in October.
At the moment, San Diego County's unincorporated areas are served by a patchwork of fire services. Some of them are well funded – some are not. Some have professional fire fighters – some have volunteers. Would a unified force with resources spread more equitably around the county do a better job? Joining me to talk about the issue, and what LAFCO has the power to do, is Shirley Anderson.
