Tom Fudge: Yesterday, the state Public Utilities Commission hosted two public hearings on the proposed construction of the Sunrise Powerlink. The Powerlink is a proposed $1.3 billion, 150 mile-long power transmission line. Officials at San Diego Gas and Electric say they want it built to transfer power to San Diego from the Imperial Valley. They say the power line is needed to provide a reliable supply of electricity to San Diego County, but there are many opponents to the power line.
Opponents say it would have a dramatic environmental impact on the parts of the Imperial County and San Diego County through which it travels. Many opponents say San Diego can generate enough power locally to see to its needs.
