Hundreds of doctors in Tijuana stopped work and attended only to emergencies today to protest kidnappings and crime in the city. KPBS reporter Amy Isackson has details.
The kidnapping of a prominent Tijuana doctor earlier this week galvanized the protest. His captors freed him after one day. However, doctors say this woke them up. They say other colleagues are missing. Many have received calls from people who try to extort money. And it's not just happening to them, but has touched hundreds and scared thousands city-wide.
Doctor Ismael Gonzalez says Baja California authorities tell them they don't have the resources to crackdown.
Gonzalez : Gonzalez says they’re asking the federal government to send more money and forces. He says it’s not like they're not asking for more pay or vacation. They’re just asking to live peacefully and make sure their families and everyone in Tijuana is safe.
The governor of Baja California has agreed to meet with the doctors on Monday.
