Permanent Alcohol Ban on City Beaches Debated

Should San Diego pass a permanent ban on alcohol at the city's coastal parks and beaches? How has the environment at San Diego beaches changed since the City Council voted to a pass a one-year alcoho

Permanent Alcohol Ban on City Beaches Debated

Tom Fudge: We've got a lot of propositions we need to vote on in San Diego, coming up on the November ballot. Some of them, no doubt, you haven't heard of and barely understand. But proposition D addresses a subject that's pretty familiar to us. A subject you've probably given some thought to. Should we allow people to drink alcohol at the beach?

A "yes" vote on Prop D would impose a ban on beer, wine and booze at the beach. Right now, those substances are banned until early next year, due to a pilot prohibition, passed by the City Council. Prop D would make that ban permanent. Proponents of the beach booze ban say it has already proven itself to be an effective way of reducing crime, trash and obnoxious behavior at the beach. Opponents say the beach is not more pleasant than it once was. In fact, they say it's become a less desirable for locals and tourists.
