The City of San Diego’s Fire Prevention Committee meets this morning to decide whether to support a new parcel tax to raise money for fire prevention. KPBS reporter Alison St John has more.
Proposition A would raise everyone’s property taxes by $52 a year.
Little campaigning has been done for the measure, but cities around the county are considering whether to support it.
San Diego’s Independent Budget Analyst says the city would get about $20 million of the $50 million raised countywide.
Half would have to go to a new regional Joint Powers Authority.
But analyst Lisa Celaya says the rest could be used to do what the city’s fire service has wanted to do for years: build or refurbish seven new fire stations.
Celaya : It’s great that it’s going to allow us to build new stations, but we also have to look at will we have enough resources to pay for the operating cost ?
Celaya calculates the city would have to find another $13 million to operate the seven new stations by the year 2016.
The city needs 22 new fire stations to meet national accreditation standards.
