The San Diego Rescue Mission will make sure Christmas dinner happens tomorrow for people staying at the city’s Homeless Shelter, a big tent on 16 th Street downtown. KPBS reporter Alison St John has more.
The San Diego Rescue Mission is one of the largest recyclers of food in the city.
Herb Johnson, the Rescue Mission’s President, says last year they recycled over 5 million pounds of food
Johnson :
" We got food last night from the Poinsettia Bowl, we got it from the Convention Center. We also buy from the two Foodbanks here in town, so we have special menus - like Christmas, we can provide the kind of meals that people might expect, so we’ll have the traditional turkey and the stuffing and the potatoes."
Johnson says the Rescue Mission’s kitchen will deliver the hot meals to the 200 plus people in the city’s winter shelter.
He says when recycling food, the cooks get creative. For example, when the Padres were bumped out of the playoffs, they donated a thousand pounds of salsa - which was quickly incorporated into pasta recipes for the hungry and homeless around town.
