The San Diego Zoo is sponsoring a forum Saturday on the state of endangered species. KPBS Environment Reporter Ed Joyce has details.
The forum brings together scientists sharing their research about San Diego's river systems, California condors, and bighorn sheep among others.
Michael Fay works for the National Geographic Society and the Wildlife Conservation Society.
Fay studied a stretch of redwood trees in the Klamath Valley in Northern California in 2007 and 2008.
Fay and a fellow researcher walked a through a section of the entire redwood range from south to north, more than 1,850 miles.
He determined that instead of clear-cutting or short-term rotations, restoration forestry would be a more productive method of managing forests.
Fay:
Forestry that is practiced worldwide is either liquidation logging or these short-term rotations and yet we have an opportunity to grow forests back and actually over time take more wood out of these forests.
Fay says only about three percent of the old growth remains in the Klamath area.
