The economic federal stimulus package was signed into law today. San Diego Congresswoman Susan Davis says she believes this is a good bill the region. KPBS reporter Katie Orr has details.
California as a whole will get 26 billion dollars from the stimulus package. Some of that money will go to the state and some will be funneled directly to cities and counties. Davis says she expects the money could create up to 30 thousand jobs in San Diego. But she says the stimulus bill will also stabilize existing positions.
Davis : Part of what we’re trying to do is to not just create jobs, but also sustain jobs. So, that will not be as obvious because it won’t be so much new jobs that are created, but jobs that didn’t fall out for people.
Davis says a lot of the money will find its way into communities. But local governments will have to apply for grants. Davis says the stimulus is expensive, but is an important part of bringing the country out of the recession.
