San Diego County’s Property Tax Assessor says the number of people requesting property reassessments is on track to be as high this year as last year. But he says, the brunt of the reassessments may have already been done. KPBS reporter Aliso,n St John has more.

The overall assessed value of all property in San Diego County is still growing but at a fraction of the growth in previous years. It rose only 4.6 % last year from the year before, and this year the growth is likely to be less than half that.

Interim County Tax Assessor Dave Butler says his office reassessed 80 thousand properties last year . That's about 8% of all the County's parcels.

He says there’s a steady stream of people applying to be reassessed this year, but it may not result in as many lowered assessments as last year.

Butler: "That’s what I’m thinking is we’ve got more than half,   the majority of them last year, we’re certainly going to have more this year but whether we’re going to have another 80 thousand I don’t know yet."

Butler says California sees  less violent swings in property values than other states, because Proposition 13 limits property tax growth to 2% a year.

She has done many stories on the military in San Diego, and the series she edited on the challenges veterans face returning from active duty to civilian life won “Best of Show” from the San Diego Society of Professional Journalists. She occasionally hosts the KPBS Roundtable and KPBS Midday Edition. Alison has won awards from the San Diego Press Club, the Society of Professional Journalists, the Associated Press TV and Radio Association, and the California Golden Mike Awards. Alison was born in Tanzania, brought up in Scotland, and earned her degree in psychology and sociology from Durham University in England. Her postgraduate diploma is in student counseling. She worked in England, Nigeria, Switzerland, Belgium, India, and Japan before moving to the United States in 1981. She now lives in Oceanside and enjoys how her community is growing and changing.
