Replacement Chosen For S.D. Fire Chief

Mayor Jerry Sanders is expected to announce today that Assistant San Diego Fire Chief Javier Mainar will be replacing Tracy Jarman.

Mainar had many supporters, including San Diego Fire Chief Tracy Jarman, who endorsed him when she announced her own retirement in May. Jarman was one of more than 600 employees who chose early retirement in order to avoid pay and pension cuts after serving for 25 years with the city.

Mainar has worked for the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department for 29 years, and was promoted to assistant fire chief in 2006. His promotion comes at a difficult time for San Diego Fire-Rescue. The city's expected $179 million budget shortfall next year is expected to pose challenges for the department. Plans for future police and fire academies have already been canceled by the mayor.
