San Diego To Host Preliminary Round Of America's Cup

A preliminary round for the America's Cup sailing regatta will be held on the waters off San Diego this fall, the organizers of the races announced Friday.

No specific dates have been set for what will be the third stop of the AC World Series, but they should be set for between mid-October and early December, according to the announcement on the America's Cup website.

Sailing's top trophy is currently held by the Oracle Racing team, led by Larry Ellison, founder of the Oracle software firm based in San Francisco.

The America's Cup finals are scheduled for 2013, hosted by the Golden Gate Yacht Club.

San Diego hosted the finals in 1988, 1992 and 1995 and put in a bid for the 2013 event.

The AC World Series, which will also include races in Portugal and England, is designed to prepare sailors for the challengers and defenders races that will determine which teams compete in the finals.

Fifteen teams have announced that they will compete for the cup.
