Jay Carney, who fielded reporters' tough questions for more than three years as White House press secretary, will resign.
Announcing the move, President Obama said: "Jay has become one of my closest friends."
"It's been a privilege and it continues to be a privilege to serve," Carney said immediately after the announcement.
Josh Earnest, who currently serves as the White House special assistant to the president, will be Carney's replacement.
