San Diego History Center will honor former State Senator Christine Kehoe and State Senate President pro Tempore Toni Atkins as its "2019 Makers of San Diego History."

In a statement, History Center CEO Bill Lawrence said: “As we look forward to what we want our community to look like in the future, we are honoring the struggles and triumphs of San Diego's LGBTQ+ community along with two of our civic leaders who have made history in their own time by furthering inclusion and diversity."

Kehoe made history in 1993 with her city council election. That's when she became San Diego county's first openly gay elected official. She served in the State Senate from 2004 to 2012. She sat down with KPBS Evening Edition Ebone Monet to talk about her career.
