Drive-through events have become a familiar part of the pandemic. Seniors have been driving through to pick up food at the George L. Stevens Senior Center in Skyline for months.
But on Friday, a week before Christmas, things were different. The food came with some holiday cheer.
Seniors driving through were handed a poinsettia and a holiday stocking along with a hot-cooked meal.
Inside those bright red and white stockings were handcrafted holiday greeting cards, and another kind of card everybody likes to get: gift cards!
Rosemary Pope is in charge of this merry event, but the executive director of the Stevens Senior Center got plenty of help from some volunteers.
“We wanted to enhance and embrace the quality of their lives in spite of the COVID 19,” Pope said.
“They’re making us feel extra special because we have goodie bags, we’re getting poinsettias," said Brenda Lesane.
In pre-pandemic times, Lesane and her husband were regulars at the Stevens Senior Center. She said it’s a life-giving place for seniors.
“Before the pandemic, we could come here, we could exercise, we could do classes and it’s the best place for any senior," said Lesane.
Of course those activities will return once the pandemic is past.
But for this day, some sustenance mixed with a holiday spirit was just the ticket.
