With nearly a dozen cases pending, now the family of a Vista man who died by suicide in county jail is the latest to sue San Diego county for wrongful death.

The family of a Vista man who died by suicide in county jail last year is the latest to sue San Diego County for wrongful death. The suit, filed this week, is one of nearly a dozen pending over death or serious injury in San Diego County jails.

The family claims the death of Joseph Morton, 33, would not have happened if Sheriff's Department staff and contracted medical personnel had followed the department’s suicide prevention policies.

Freelance reporter Kelly Davis spoke with Midday Edition on Thursday about her story for The San Diego Union-Tribune.
