At the top of the list in terms of interest are a collection of student films from the Independent Film and Television College in Baghdad. Here's information from the press release:
The film school in Baghdad was set up in 2004 by Kasim Abid and Maysoon Pachachi, two Iraqi filmmakers who have lived outside the country for many years and have long teaching and film production experience in Europe and the Arab World. Thirty-five years of dictatorship, three devastating wars, thirteen years of the most comprehensive sanctions in history, extreme political and criminal violence and now an unpredictable, frightening future have all but silenced the voices of Iraq's traumatized population. Maysoon and Hasim want to help young people in particular to unlock their creative potential and talents and to provide them with a professional training to enable them to put their thoughts and stories on the screen.
IBFF will also play host to the Best of the San Diego International Children's Film Festival. Dan Bennett will screen films from the SDICFF on Saturday evening September 20th at the Cinema by the Surf. This outdoor event is open to the public at no charge. There will also be a digital filmmakers series.
Back again as part of the festival is the Imperial Beach Art-Walk. Visitors attending the Art-Walk can view works by local artists and watch as local artists are given a canvas that must be completed on Saturday. This year the art walk will be adding sculpting and ceramics.
IBFF strives to involve young people and to energize them through art. I hope you'll stop by the festival to show your support. The film festival is sponsored by the South County Renaissance Project, a non-profit organization, which supports art and technology-based education for the youths in the South region of San Diego County.
