Last Saturday at the Blacklist Art and Film Festival (more on this later) I was exposed to one of the most original horror shorts I have seen in years, "Treevenge." Now those filmmakers have a feature: "Hobo with a Shotgun."

"Treevenge" is one of the most inspired pieces of sick horror humor I have ever seen so you can imagine my delight when I discovered that the filmmakers -- Jason Eisener, John Davies, and Rob Cotterill -- had a feature film in the works called "Hobo with a Shotgun." Well, actually there's a funny story about that. In trying to find more information about the film I discovered that as with "Machete," "Hobo" began as a faux trailer, and it was a faux trailer made for an SXSW contest sponsored by Robert Rodriguez and the movie "Grindhouse." The filmmaking trio designed a trailer for their own fake grindhouse film, one entitled "Hobo With a Shotgun." Now a real film looks to be in the works.

The film stars Rutger Hauer as, you guessed it, a hobo with a shotgun... and an agenda of violent revenge. This trailer is a slow build to some over the top gore . So be forewarned, this is not for the squeamish. But for diehard horror fans, this is a little manna from heaven (or perhaps hell).

I've heard rumors that the trailer was supposed to play before "Machete," but it did not accompany the print I saw at midnight. But it would have been a welcome relief from the crap that was being promoted before "Machete" everything from "Chain Letter" to "Devil" to "Wall Street 2." I only wish we could have seen the "Hobo" trailer on the big screen before "Machete" so that the tone would have been properly set for Robert Rodriguez' grindhouse homage.

So I hope this trailer isn't just a tease. I hope the feature film will really hit theaters. But if it doesn't, at least I have this trailer to make me smile.
