Statistics confirm that the incidence of diabetes in this country is on the rise. Thirty million Americans are living with diabetes and a staggering 86 million have been diagnosed with a pre-diabetic condition.
It’s been called everything from a diabetes epidemic to a national and global health crisis. But a growing body of research suggests that yoga — paired with the right diet — can be helpful for those at risk and those already living with diabetes.
“Easy Yoga For Diabetes With Peggy Cappy” is part of special programming premiering on PBS stations.
A study published last year in the journal Evidence Based Alternative Medicine found that regular yoga practice led to “short term improvements in fasting glucose and cholesterol levels.”
Even the world-famous Joslin Diabetes Center reports that because yoga can decrease stress, it may be helpful in controlling glucose levels in people with either Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes.
This makes sense when we understand that yoga stimulates the organs that improve metabolic activity and makes all our systems function more efficiently.
Yoga instructor Peggy Cappy shows audiences how yoga and the right diet can positively impact the struggle with diabetes. Through first-person accounts of five individuals coping with diabetes or pre-diabetes, we learn how yoga is improving their lives.
Interviews with the authors of "Yoga and Diabetes"—Lisa Nelson, M.D., and nutritionist and dietician Annie Kay—are also featured.
