A new study by the California Immigrant Policy Center finds that immigrants generate about 25 percent of San Diego County's gross domestic product.
The study provides a new set of statistics on immigrants' contributions to the San Diego region. It determined that immigrants make up nearly one-quarter of San Diego County's population. Nearly one-third of the county's labor force is immigrants.
Murtaza Baxamusa is with the Center on Policy Initiatives, a think tank for issues that affect working families.
He says the report lays the foundation for a rational analysis of immigrants' contributions.
That foundation is important, Baxamusa says, "so that there can be a rational dialogue and a real thorough analysis of what the impacts of immigration reform are on different sectors of the economy."
The findings are based on census data collected between 2005 and 2007 and do not distinguish between legal and illegal immigrants.
