The U.S. Census Bureau released the first set of population projections based on the 2010 census. The projections span from 2012 to 2060.
The overall conclusion is not surprising. The U.S. population is growing at slower rate, growing older and more diverse over time. Although the “sleeping giant” Hispanic population has been in the national spotlight since the election, the figures are dramatic:
The Hispanic population is likely to more than double during the next half-century, growing from 53.3 million in 2012 to 128.8 million in 2060.
By 2060, one out of three U.S. residents is likely to be Hispanic.
The U.S. is projected to become a majority-minority nation in 2043. The non-Hispanic white population will remain the largest group, but no single group will be a majority.
All minorities are now 37 percent of the U.S. population. By 2060, what are now considered minorities are projected to comprise 57 percent.
