Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen will visit San Diego Tuesday to meet with immigration officials and conduct a tour of the San Ysidro Port of Entry.
Nielsen is expected to meet with employees of U.S. Immigration and Custom Enforcement while in San Diego. She also plans to receive a briefing on the federal government's so-called Migrant Protection Protocols, which went into effect last Friday.

Under the new rules, immigrants who apply for asylum at the U.S.- Mexico border will no longer be allowed into the country while they await a court date, when their asylum case would be heard. Instead, asylum-seekers are required to stay in Mexico while immigration officials under DHS purview review their case. DHS officials say the new protocols will lessen the strain on the country's immigration system.
Nielsen's visit is her first to San Diego County since Nov. 20, when she gave a news conference at Border Field State Park that railed against illegal border crossings. Other than her visit to the port of entry, DHS did not disclose if she would visit anywhere else in the country or what time she would arrive.
