Even through Wednesday’s rain, Feeding San Diego volunteers held a large-scale drive-through food distribution event at Legoland California Resort in Carlsbad for North County households facing hunger.
President of Legoland, Kurt Stocks, offered the park’s empty parking lot to accommodate the thousands of cars that lined up for the food distribution.
“We actually reached out to Feeding San Diego initially because we wanted to do something for our own staff. We’ve got over 1,000 staff that have been on furlough for the best part of 12 months now,” Stocks said.
Stocks has seen how the hospitality industry has been hit by the pandemic and saw this as an opportunity to help his workers and the community.
“Today there’s been over 12,000 cars come through and get some much-needed food," he said.
As Legoland plans for their reopening phase, Stocks said that information about possible jobs at the company was also given to people that attended the food distribution.
Feeding San Diego's Sam Duke says they've seen a 50% increase of people facing hunger in San Diego County. The organization will continue holding food distributions throughout the county during the pandemic.
