San Diego Unified's Interim School Superintendent William Kowba says the district will need to rely more heavily on community groups, businesses and volunteers to stay solvent.
Kowba discussed the district's educational well-being in front of hundreds of school district administrators at a community breakfast.
He says San Diego Unified is in a state of transition as a result of budgetary and leadership setbacks. Now Kowba says it's time to foster a new, deeper sense of teamwork.
He says local schools will need to recruit more volunteers to keep programs going. Businesses will need to provide extra funding. And lawmakers will need to stick-up for education.
"The teamwork that I believe is necessary to mitigate the challenges of public education, needs to take us beyond the school grounds and outside of the education center and into the neighborhoods, the businesses and the organizations and the communities we serve."
The school board is considering cuts as it moves forward with the superintendent search process. Board president Richard Barrera is expected to give the district's official state of education address next month.
