Several events are scheduled around San Diego Friday to observe the 14th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks, including a ceremony at the USS Midway Aircraft Carrier Museum.
The Midway event is set for 2:30 p.m. and will include guest speakers from the San Diego Police Department and Fire-Rescue Department. A pair of SDFRD helicopters are schedule to make a fly-by and the U.S. Border Patrol will fire a 21-gun salute.
In other remembrance events:
— children at Sunnyside Elementary School will honor military, police officers, firefighters and other local heroes with a pancake breakfast and fundraising run beginning at 7 a.m., 5430 San Miguel Road, Bonita;
— a visiting memorial that includes a 720-pound hunk of debris from the World Trade Center South Tower and other displays will be available for viewing beginning at 8 a.m., with a ceremony at 6 p.m., Vince Ross Square, Main and Alvarado streets, Fallbrook; and
— Sen. Joel Anderson, R-El Cajon, will host an observance featuring area elected officials, community leaders and first responders in the Grossmont College Main Quad, 8800 Grossmont College Drive, El Cajon.
