Volunteers from both sides of the US Mexico border plan to haul trash out San Diego's Tijuana River Valley on Saturday morning. Volunteers hope to prevent flooding in the Valley this winter and help keep trash from floating out to sea.

Volunteers from Tijuana, U.S. Navy Seals, surfers, ranchers and students plan to fill two 40-foot dumpsters with trash from the Tijuana River Valley

When it rains, garbage from Tijuana neighborhoods that don't have garbage collection washes across the border. The Navy Seals' have had to adjust their training due to the contamination. It often makes surfers sick.

Ben McCue organized the clean up for the coastal conservation group Wildcoast. He says half an inch of rain can carry a couple thousand tires into the valley. "And, I'd estimate, over a hundred tons of trash. In this clean up, we're trying to get everything that will get washed away with the first rains."

McCue says it's a health hazard to clean the valley after it rains due to sewage and other contaminants.

The clean up begins tomorrow at 9 a.m. off Dairy Mart Road.
