School-based flu vaccinations in San Diego County are likely to be suspended this week because of a shortage of H1N1 vaccine.
This year many local school districts took the unusual step of offering vaccinations at schools in response to the concern about swine flu. But the vaccination program is administered by San Diego County, and the county health department has run out of its current supply of vaccine.
"Several schools and school districts have participated," said Karen Waters-Montijo, chief of the department's immunization branch. "But anything scheduled after this week will probably have to be rescheduled, unless we get more vaccine."
Waters-Montijo says she doesn't know when the county will receive more supply. But many private clinics in San Diego do still have H1N1 vaccine, and people should call their doctors to ask what's available.
