Germany to Release Red Army Faction Leader

A court in Germany approves the release from prison of a former leader of the Red Army Faction. Brigitte Mohnhaupt is one of the last few members of the group, also known as the Baader-Meinhof gang, still in jail.

The gang was active from the 1970s to the '80s, when it kidnapped and murdered a number of German politicians, officials and business leaders. In the name of class warfare, the group also attacked NATO and U.S. military installations with bombs and guns.

The days when the Red Army Faction ran free were traumatic for many in Germany. Leading businessmen and high government officials traveled in armed convoys. German police started carrying machine guns.
