Erdogan Claims Victory in Turkey Election

Turks went to the polls Sunday for a parliamentary general election and re-elected Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan. After four and a half years in power, his AK Party has once again won a majority of seats in parliament, despite warnings from the secular opposition that the government is a threat to secular traditions.

Erdogan addressed a cheering crowd Sunday night outside his party headquarters in Ankara.

One of parliament's first jobs will be to elect a president. The post is largely ceremonial, but the incumbent has the power to veto legislative bills and government appointments.
