KPBS has revealed a new logo for the first time in 28 years. This is the seventh logo for KPBS since it first went on air in 1960. The former logo had been in place since 1991.
The new logo consists of two parts: the “community voice bubble” element and the logo type. The new design is a visual representation of KPBS’ role in stimulating lively conversation in the many communities it serves with wide-ranging content across an array of channels.
“We understand that our logo was loved and recognized within the community. However, it was not digital-friendly for streaming and online content platforms,” says Tom Karlo, general manager. “Most importantly, it was no longer reflective of who we are and where we are headed.”
“KPBS is an integral part of our community now and in the future. We needed our logo to show that we will adapt to remain relevant and that we’re committed to being the place where the community comes together for the stories and stays for the conversation, for generations to come.”
In addition, KPBS wrote a new mission and vision as part of a long-term strategic plan initiative in 2018. Team members from all departments developed organizational priorities that will set a path for the public media stations (TV, radio and digital) for the next decade and help keep KPBS one of the nation’s most successful public media organizations.
“The KPBS mission is to provide stories that make us think, help us dream, and keep us connected. The vision is to tell the stories of our time. Our new logo represents our new era of storytelling. We’re bringing more content to more people in more ways. We are so proud of where we’ve been and we’re excited about where we’re going,” says Karlo.
A KPBS member focus group, led by a design agency, provided feedback on the logo direction and design. The design agency was challenged to come up with something that was clean, bold and allude to KPBS’ commitment to community service. The new logo was released to the public today and can be seen on KPBS-TV and kpbs.org.
