San Diego Zoo's Panda Cub Eats Bamboo Cake For Birthday

Xiao Liwu Eats Cake

One of the San Diego Zoo's giant pandas celebrated his second birthday Tuesday with cake and presents.

Xiao Liwu, on loan from China, chomped down on his four-foot-tall cake made from ice, bamboo, apples, carrots and smashed yam frosting. The cake was four feet tall and made to look like the beach, with a blue ocean and palm trees.

He then checked out his gifts, boxes filled with hay, alfalfa and pine shavings and scented with cinnamon.

Xiao Liwu, whose name means "little gift," was born July 29, 2012.

Giant pandas in the U.S. are on a research loan to the zoo from China, but Davis said China can't ask for them to be returned until they're at least 3 years old.

Davis does not know if or when Xiao Liwu will go back to China. She said his brother, Yun Zi, did not go back until he was 4 years old.
