San Diego's Top Weekend Events: Block Parties And Festivals GUEST:Nina Garin, editor/producer, KPBS/Arts Calendar

We are back with the Friday midday edition, it's time for our weekend preview, starring the arts calendar editor, Nina Garin. Yesterday Broadway San Diego announced that Hamilton will be coming to San Diego sometime during the 2018 season. This is a big deal. It's a really big deal. The show is still a major hit on Broadway, it's sold out throughout next year. It's nominated for 16 Tony awards that are happening Sunday. The cast will be for performing at the Tony's. This is really exciting. For those who don't know about it. What is "Hamilton" It's a hip-hop cop -- musical. It's based on the life of Alexander Hamilton. [ MUSIC ] It's important because it has a mixed race cast. Their stuff about the banking system and those are done is rap battles. It's another way to look at history. [ MUSIC ] I've been hearing about this for a long time. How long has it been in New York? The New York preview started January January 2015. It open on Broadway in August 2015. The creator is leaving July 9. Tickets are selling for $5000. What do we know about the San Diego stop? When is it going to be here? We don't know much. We just know it will be during the 27 -- 2017/2018 season. There was speculation that we won't see it any earlier than January 2018. We don't have to get information, but if you have a season subscription they guarantee you a ticket. We will tell you when we know more about when the musical, "Hamilton" is coming to town. Some popular San Diego destinations are celebrating summer in unique ways. Let's start with Balboa Park. Balboa Park After Dark is going on every Friday the Museum's will stay up until 8:00 tonight. Are all museums participating? There are popular ones like the San Diego Museum of Art, the Museum of man, a lot of the favorites will be open. What can visitors expect from Balboa Park After Dark There will be food trucks, performances, a special thing is that you can take the California power to her at sunset. Balboa Park After Dark happens Fridays, beginning today through November 2. Liberty station is also having a celebration. Tell us about the summer block party? There are so many new things at Liberty station. This is a celebration for people to come down and check out the new restaurants and other places. That's what the Liberty Station Summer Block Party is about. There is an area that's designated as an Arts District. It's a huge space, but right in the heart is considered the Arts District. You have the ballet, museums, there will be open studios and you can check out all the arts studios. There will be free entrance to some museums. Comickaze Comics has moved to Liberty station. That's exciting. They are doing a free outdoor screening of the -- "The Avengers' at 8 PM in the Barracks 15 . That's from 6 PM to 9 PM on Saturday. The mainly Mozart Festival is in full swing happening all over San Diego. This year's theme is the prodigy. Tell us about "The Other Mozart". This is a unique show by Sylvia Milo, it's a one-woman show about the life of Mozart's sister, tran 13. -- Nannerl Mozart . I didn't even know Mozart had a sister. Tell us something about Nannearl She was his older sister , she was equally as talented and she performed with him. She stopped performing, because your job as a woman was to be a wife and mother. We have progress these days, in certain countries about women. There's still prejudice, just as I found out there is no such thing as a woman genius in the 18th century. There could have been to Mozart's and why not? Why aren't there? The other Mozart -- "The Other Mozart" is at the waterfront Theatre. This is not a new festival. It was formerly called the La Jolla Festival of the arts. It's been going on for 30 years. The Columbus foundation puts it on. The sheer moves waterfront Park. This is not free. How much are tickets and does the money for this go to any benefit? The tickets are $12-$17, four years this is been a benefit for sports and programs for people with disabilities. If I go to this what will I see? It's a art walk, there is art for sales, paintings, sculptures. There will be local musicians, Gail Skidmore, food from restaurants. And of course beer. The San Diego Festival of the Arts is all day Saturday and Sunday at waterfront Park . My guess is been Nina Garin.
