Transgender Veterans Speak Out In Wake of Don't Ask Don't Tell Repeal

While gay and lesbian veterans and servicemembers celebrate the ability to serve openly in the military, transgender veterans are continuing to fight for a place. The AP's Lisa Leff has written a comprehensive, fascinating look at this movement, with a special emphasis on San Diego-based veteran Autumn Sandeen:

As Leff points out, "Military regulations state that men and women who identify with or present a gender different from their sex at birth have mental conditions that make them ineligible to serve." But that doesn't mean they don't, exactly. Read to the end of the story for a surprise.
