Could a Study on Military Helmets Help NFL Players?

NBC Sports has an interesting take on a military helmet study that Home Post reported on last week. Just to refresh your memory, the study from the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory found (as reported on by USA Today) that as little as 1/8th of an inch of extra padding in an Army helmet could reduce brain injury by as much as 24 percent.

According to NBC Sports, the study looked at two differently designed helmets used by players in the National Football League. But an unclassified version of the study (read the PDF version here) obtained by NBC Sports shows that what works for Army helmets might not work for NFL helmets. Why? Because of the way the wearers receive their injuries:

I suppose it could all be a moot point for NFL players if they aren't playing next season.
